Texas Holdem Poker Guide - Playing the Game
The sole objective in Holdem is to form a combination of five cards that will beat other players' hands. This may be formed either from the hole and community cards or just from the community cards.
The sequence is basically as follows:
Posting the Blinds - these are bets placed by two players on the dealer's left side. The player to the dealer's left posts the big blind, the one next to him posts the small blind which is half the amount of the big blind.
Hole Cards - these are two cards that are given faced down to Holdem players. If the dealer mistakenly deals the cards incorrectly, the cards need to be reshuffled and redealed again.
Pre Flop Betting - this is betting prior the flops are dealt. It is the first round of betting for the game. Players may opt to raise (increase the bet), call (match an opponent's bet increase) or fold (leave the game).
Burn Cards - these are cards that discarded in between betting rounds and community cards. This is practiced to prevent cheating.
The Flop - these are the first three community cards. These must always be dealt face up and placed at the table's center.
Second Betting - this is done after the flop but prior to the burn card and fourth community card.
The Turn - burn cards are always discarded before the fourth community card is drawn.
Third Betting - this is the third and last betting round before the last community card is dealt
The River - this is dealt after a burn card, and is the final community card to be drawn
The Showdown - this is where active players (those who have not folded) show and compare their hands to determine the winner of the game.

The Ace - A Special Multi-Purpose Card

The ace is either the highest or lowest value card in a poker game. Its origins trace back to the Latin word as, which simply means "a unit". Thus in its first incarnation our ace was a one. How it moved from there to its top value is uncertain. Its dual nature is however unique; it gives certainty to the player who holds one and doubt to the player who doesn't.
The High Card
In standard games the ace has the highest value in forming hands. This applies to single cards as well as hands. For example, As Ac is worth more than Ks Kc. This affords the player holding aces a particular assurance that somebody with the same hand type as their own cannot beat them.
Abdul and Thorsten are both showing flushes. Abdul feels rather comfortable since he is holding the ace of his suit; he knows he cannot be beaten. Thorsten however has a queen high, and the bets from Abdul are unnerving him a great deal. In this case Abdul holds the nut hand and simply needs to make sensible value bets to maximize his profit.Sitting in the highest position one tends to see a disproportionate number of games won with an ace in the hand than any other card. This is not to say however that this is the natural distribution. Indeed it may more be that people overvalue the ace and tend to play more often with it.
This should be noted as a point of caution. The ace is not magical. It sounds silly, but many people, particularly in hold'em tend to think of it as such. A pair of aces is at its heart still a pair. It won't win against three of a kind, even three twos.
Duality In virtually all games where the ace is high, it may also be used as a low card. This of course only makes sense in the context of a straight, in particular a five high straight such as 5♥ 4♦ 3♣ 2♠ A♥.
Such a nature gives an ace a significantly improved value over other cards. It is almost like holding two cards rather than one. This results in a significant increase in the number of outs.
The Low Card
In lowball games the aces are normally considered low. Several variations exist however, so it is best to pay attention to the fine points of the game being played. Being low simply means it has the value of one and loses any special status.
In stark contrast to ace high games, the ace does not have any extraordinary value in lowball. Since it is the lowest card, it comes last when comparing the value of two hands. Having an ace doesn't improve your chances that future cards will better your hand.
In a game of Razz Crystal forms a low hand of 9♣ 7♦ 5♣ 4♦ A♠ and Ming shows 8♦ 7♣ 6♠ 5♦ 3♠. The A♠ in Crystal's hand does nothing to improve the fact she has the high 9♣ sitting there.

Playing Ace Queen in Poker

Playing Ace Queen in a poker game is tricky to do. Referred to as Little Slick, with Big Slick being the more preferred Ace King. It lacks the benefit of the cards being connected, but can be more desirable if the cards are suited.
Many players have a tendency to over play this hand in early position, with there being a few hands that can dominate these cards. While it does have the advantage of being high face cards, it does not have the benefit of being the two highest cards in poker, but still has a number of hands that are more than likely to beat it. You want to stay away from AA and AK as your percentage of winning a hand against these hands are low.
The best hand you could hope for would be a royal flush, the worst hand is high card. More than likely you will hit a straight, or possibly one pair with a good kicker. Rarely will you hit a full house, but it does happen. Be careful when playing the high pair as you may find yourself losing a large chip stack to a player in later position who is holding AK.
Raising before the flop on this hand in late position is advisable, since this is considered a strong hand. It should be assumed that if a flop proves to be beneficial for this hand that raising is mandatory to be portrayed as an aggressive player, and to put the odds of the hand in your favor.
It is safe to say that not playing Ace Queen would be a bad move. Folding before a flop with a top ten hand is always a bad idea. It is not necessarily a bad idea to fold after the flop, if the flop proves to hold a much lower straight draw, or any other cards that are not beneficial to your hand.
